Network Automation Engineer

Requirements

Must have:

• BSc/MSc in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent.
• 5+ years of relevant experience in the networking field.
• 3+ years of Python development experience.
• Networking Fundamentals:
o Solid understanding of OSI and TCP/IP models.
o IP addressing and subnetting (CIDR, VLSM).
o Ethernet switching and VLANs (802.1Q, LACP).
o IP routing fundamentals (static vs dynamic, convergence).
• Routing, MPLS & Segment Routing:
o BGP fundamentals (iBGP/eBGP, path attributes, best-path selection).
o OSPF fundamentals (areas, adjacencies, LSAs).
o Basic IS-IS concepts (L1/L2, areas).
o MPLS fundamentals (labels, LDP, L3VPN concepts).
o Basic understanding of EVPN and VPWS.
o Basic understanding of Segment Routing (SR-MPLS) and SRv6 concepts (SIDs, paths, steering).
• Network Automation Interfaces:
o Experience with programmatic network interfaces (NETCONF, gNMI, and/or vendor APIs).
• Systems & Linux
o Linux command-line basics and system troubleshooting.
o Docker fundamentals (containers, images, basic networking).
• Automation & Python:
o Strong Python skills for automation.
o Experience with structured data (JSON, YAML, XML).
o Working knowledge of object-oriented concepts (inheritance, composition).
o Practical understanding of mixins, super(), and Method Resolution Order (MRO).
o Experience using and extending versioned automation libraries.
• Pytest-Based Automation:
o Strong experience with pytest.
o Fixture usage and scope management (function/class/module/session).
o Parameterization, including indirect parametrization (request.param).
o Dynamic fixture selection and object construction.
o Reliable setup/teardown and test state management.
• Test Reliability & Abstractions:
o Managing stateful resources and preventing test leakage.
o Using fixtures and/or context managers for transactional changes.
o Familiarity with wrapper abstractions (retry, wait/polling helpers).
o Awareness of parallel execution and resource contention issues.
• Traffic Validation & Observability:
o Basic experience validating forwarding behavior using traffic generators or software-based tools
(e.g., Ixia, Spirent, TRex, Scapy).
o Ability to analyze logs and telemetry data (device logs, syslog, counters) as part of automated
testing and troubleshooting.
• Security & Access Control:
o Basic understanding of network access and authentication mechanisms (AAA, TACACS+,
RADIUS).
• Code Quality:
o Writing clean, maintainable automation code.
o Experience working in shared codebases with version control.

Nice to have:

• AI-Assisted Automation:
o Experience using AI tools to support automation development and troubleshooting.
o Ability to clearly frame problems and ask precise questions.
o Understanding AI limitations and the need to validate AI-generated output.
o Comfort using AI as an assistive tool, not a runtime decision-maker.

Responsibilities

• Automate deployment, monitoring, and configuration management for complex networked systems. 
• Implement infrastructure-as-code (IaC) principles to streamline system automation.  
• Collaborate with networking teams to enhance automation in switching, routing, security, and virtualization.
• Troubleshoot and optimize network configurations through automation tools and scripting. 
• Work in a CI/CD environment, integrating automation into continuous deployment pipelines. 
• Develop and maintain APIs, microservices, and automation tools for system reliability. 
• Implement and enhance security best practices in automated systems.
