About the Role
Our client's engineering team designs, builds, and operates the company's messaging platform on self-managed infrastructure, taking full ownership of the entire software lifecycle - from understanding customer needs and defining requirements, through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and long-term operation. The team works in a cloud-native, automation-first environment with strong engineering ownership and freedom to shape technologies, tools, and solutions.
Work model: Hybrid, with up to two home-office days per week where operational responsibilities allow. Permanent, full-time position (80%-100%), based in Switzerland.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in software architecture, technology selection, and engineering decisions
- Design, develop and operate high-performance Java backend services and REST APIs
- Implement scalable concurrent and network-oriented application logic using modern Java technologies
- Build modular services using Spring Framework and Spring Boot
- Design and optimize data access layers using JDBC, JPA, and related persistence technologies
- Integrate applications with MySQL/XtraDB Cluster, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Redis, and Apache Artemis
- Contribute to developing and maintaining Angular web applications and integration interfaces
- Collaborate closely with Platform Engineering and Infrastructure & Network Engineering teams regarding deployment, observability, and operational reliability
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Maven, Git, and GitLab
- Package and deliver applications as container images for Kubernetes environments
- Take ownership of software quality through testing, code reviews, and continuous improvement
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical application support and incidents

Key Requirements
- Strong hands-on experience with Java development in production environments (5+ years)
- Understanding of Java concurrency, multithreading, and network communication
- Experience with Spring Framework, Spring Boot and distributed systems integration
- Good knowledge of SQL, JDBC, JPA/Hibernate
- Practical experience with clustered database, cache, search, and messaging technologies including MySQL/XtraDB, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Redis, and Apache Artemis
- Experience with web application development; Angular knowledge is an advantage
- Experience with IntelliJ, Maven, Git, GitLab CI/CD, and container technologies
- Good understanding of Kubernetes, Linux (Debian), and containerizing Java apps
- Education in Computer Science or a related field
- Fluent in English
- Open to relocating to Switzerland
- German language skills
- Strong soft skills (problem-solving, teamwork, communication)
