Job Description

**This is a 100% Remote position on a B2B contract basis.**💡Part-time workload of approximately 20 hours per week
💡 Initial 3-month contract, extendable
💡 Pioneering lab automation SaaS platform connecting lab equipment and cloud workflows
💡 Shared Python libraries (Bus, Connector Development Kit) powering hardware connectors
💡 Open-source approach for CDK and standardization work (SiLA 2)
💡 Direct impact on life science R&D, biotech, pharma, and global health challenges
We are looking for a Senior Python Engineer, Platform Libraries (m|f|d) to support our partner's team as a part-time freelancer.
You'll play a key role in developing software that connects and translates lab equipment hardware interfaces, automates machines, and powers their next-generation automation platform.
**Your mandate has two halves**: owning the shared Python libraries (Bus, CDK, core stack) as a product, and staying close enough to customer connector work that what you build is grounded in real problems.
As part of your daily business, you will:
⏩ Own Bus, the CDK, and the core stack (features, tests, CI, releases, deprecations)
⏩ Extract abstractions from real work into shared library features and maintain clean APIs
⏩ Create comprehensive documentation to empower external and internal contributors
⏩ Set quality standards and definition of tested connectors before production release
⏩ Ship production connectors end-to-end (spec sheet, physical device, protocol, proof of connectivity, tested connector)
⏩ Reverse-engineer undocumented or incomplete hardware protocols (packet captures, trial and error)
⏩ Coordinate remotely with the hardware team and talk to scientists/automation engineers to refine platform needs
In case you are interested the project's general tech stack is:
🖥 Python (Async, typing, packaging)
🖥 SiLA 2, gRPC & zeroconf
🖥 Prefect & PostgreSQL
🖥 Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, AWS & Terraform
🖥 C / C++ / Rust (for vendor DLL/driver wrapping)
💪 100% Flexible remote setup on a B2B contract (~20 hours per week)
💪 Initial 3-month contract with possibility to extend
💪 High-impact work revolutionizing connectivity in laboratory automation 💪 Assistance in setting up the project/integrating with the team
💪 Direct architectural ownership over platform libraries and CDK
💪 Productivity budget and flexible working arrangements
💪 anything you are missing – let's talk!
You will be joining a dynamic, ambitious team on behalf of our partner based in Munich, working on cutting-edge life science automation.
If you have any further questions feel free to contact us any time!Looking forward to meeting you for a (virtual) coffee or tea ☕
