Job Description
Role Overview
SugarAI ships AI-powered selling and sales intelligence products in a market that moves faster every day. As an Associate Software Engineer, you're joining a team that builds with agentic development workflows as standard practice — where the job is to develop real fluency in that system while delivering features with close guidance from senior engineers. This is the start of your engineering career at a company where AI-first development is the baseline, not a skill you pick up on the side.
This is not a role for someone who plans to explore AI-first development after they're settled in. It's a role for someone who is already drawn to agentic tools and spec-driven development — who may be early in their career but has started working this way, understands why it matters, and wants to develop their craft in an environment where it is the default. You'll work on real features inside a B2B SaaS platform, learn to write executable specifications that drive code generation, and build the judgment to evaluate what agentic tools produce before it ships.
If you want to start your engineering career on a team where agentic workflows are standard equipment and AI-first practices are what you learn from day one, this role is for you.
What You'll Do
Agentic Development Systems
Learn to work from executable specifications — write clear SDD/BDD specs and acceptance criteria as the primary input for AI-assisted code generation, with guidance from senior engineers
Use agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or equivalents) as standard equipment across the SDLC, developing fluency from spec to implementation to test generation to code review
Apply critical judgment to AI-generated code before merge — assess correctness, edge cases, and alignment with the spec; your review is a real gate, not a formality, even at L1
Participate in the team's agentic development practices and adopt spec standards, attestation norms, and responsible AI tool use as you build your own
Feature Delivery
Implement well-scoped tasks and features within a defined feature area, delivering code that is reliable, tested, and built to the team's standards
Ensure agentic code is clean and follows the standards that make it understandable and extendable by both agentic systems and your teammates
Take ownership of assigned work end-to-end within your scope — from understanding the requirement to delivering working, production-ready code
Code Quality & Review
Review outputs, including AI-generated code and agentic attestations, with genuine care; learn to catch what automation misses
Write unit and integration tests that verify real behavior, not just execution paths; apply the same critical eye to test quality as to production code
Actively seek and apply feedback from code review to grow your understanding of the team's quality bar
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with your engineering team to understand requirements and ask the right questions before diving into implementation
Communicate clearly in writing — in specs, in code reviews, in async updates — so your work is understandable and your blockers are visible early
Participate in agile and team ceremonies, including Sprint Review and team demos, and contribute to a collaborative team culture
What Success Looks Like
You complete assigned tasks within defined scope and deliver working, tested code that passes review without significant rework
The specs you write are clear enough that your teammates — and the agentic tools you use — can build from them without ambiguity
AI-generated code you've attested reflects genuine review; you've assessed it for correctness and alignment with the spec, not rubber-stamped it
You ask the right questions before diving into implementation — surfacing ambiguities early rather than discovering them at merge
Your teammates describe you as someone who takes quality seriously and builds good habits from the start
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated familiarity with agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or equivalents) — early hands-on experience required; deep fluency expected to develop within the first few months on the job
Familiarity with BDD/SDD or spec-driven development concepts; willingness to build executable spec skills as your primary development practice immediately
0–2 years of experience in software development; new graduates with relevant project or internship work welcome
Working knowledge of at least one object-oriented or modern programming language
Familiarity with RESTful APIs and how they work
Basic knowledge of SQL or another data store
Some experience writing automated tests; understanding of unit testing concepts
Exposure to Agile development practices and version control workflows (Git)
Clear written communication; able to write structured specs and surface blockers concisely in an async-first team environment
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on coursework, projects, or internship experience in enterprise or SaaS software development
Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS or equivalent) or containerization tooling
Interest in AI/ML features and how they integrate into production software products
Background or academic focus in B2B software, data systems, or revenue technology
We understand that no candidate is perfectly qualified for any job. Experience comes in different forms; many skills are transferable; and passion goes a long way. Even more important than your resume is a clear demonstration of dedication, impact, and the ability to thrive in a fluid and collaborative environment. We want you to learn new things in this role, and we encourage you to apply if your experience is close to what we’re looking for. We also know that diversity of background and thought makes for better problem solving and more creative thinking, which is why we're dedicated to adding new perspectives to the team.
We use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support our recruiting process, including scheduling, candidate search, prioritization. AI does not make hiring decisions or automatically reject candidates; those decisions are made by people at SugarAI.
