Project Title: “Fluid behavior in the wet grinding process”
The research was aimed at developing a Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) system of using the minimum amount of coolant with a high cooling efficiency. This is opposed to the classical method of flooding the wheel with large quantities of coolant, which is expensive to dispose of after utilization. The work involved laboratory experiments using laser Doppler anemometer and CFD ( Computational Fluid Dynamics ) – FIDAP to measure the air/droplets velocities and simulate the flow between the guards and around the grinding wheel. I used GAMBITT (latest software in creating 3-D meshes) in conjunction with FIDAP to have a 3-D modeling of the flow within the space between the guards and machine table.
The work also involved the design of nozzles using AutoCAD 13/14 taking in consideration elements as: inlets, outlets, elbows. It was evidenced the importance of the boundary layer of air around the grinding wheel and the gap between the workpiece and the grinding wheel. By varying the gap between the workpiece and the griding wheel we were able to monitor when the reversal of coolant occurred while maintaining some parameters as velocity, pressure, grain size, position, oil-water mixture concentration, of the system set up unmodified. Simulations of flow using FIDAP produced similar results.The benchmark tests were carried out on a plano-type surface grinding machine and the preliminary results were implemented on a round surface grinding machine. MQL system developed was tested for low and high speed grinding and it was highly appreciated the potential use for high speed grinding. An attempt to evaluate the MQL system in creep grinding was also made and a surface grinding machine was modified for this purpose. It was noticed that although the system behaved fairly well during tests there is a need for more work in order to fully develop such system in creep grinding.

Research work on prediction of thermal damage during the grinding process. I carried out temperature measurements using single pole thermocouple positioned at the surface of the workpiece and the temperatures were recorded with a digital ATM. Various thermal damage thresholds were recorded and it was evidenced the necessity of developing a MQL system.
The research report presented the application of an original equation in the calculation of temperature in the grinding zone. I have successfully developed a program in MATLAB to predict thermal damage based on this equation for grooved workpieces.
