Financial Database Java Developer

REQUIRED:

1) Comfort with mathematics and theoretical computer science (discreet math, statistics, complexity theory and algorithms in particular)

2) Strong object oriented Java skills (has worked on a large OO project in Java with a data component for 1 year +)

3) Experience with a relational database (e.g. Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL....) and JDBC

4) Experience with development tools, including an IDE and source control (Eclipse and CVS preferred)

5) User-level linux experience

NICE TO HAVE:

1) Experience writing database or data-processing components from scratch

2) Knowledge of an object-data binding package (e.g. Hibernate, Castor....)

3) Knowledge of server-side programming, distributed/clustered computing and redundant/resilient server architectures

4) Experience with network programming and/or messaging protocols (TCP/IP, JMS, Tibco)

5) Experience with threads and concurrency

6) Comfort with the java NIO package

7) Experience managing or working with very large quantities of data (terabytes)

The project is extremely exciting. You will be helping to develop one of the most sophisticated and comprehensive databases ever built for financial market data. Unlike most financial databases which store only a small subset of the total market data generated in a day, our database aims to capture and store every trade, order and event for every second of every day, for every major financial market in the world. Our database must also allow clients to query and retrieve data efficiently, and must be robust to hardware and software failure at every level. To meet these challenges we are using an innovative clustered server architecture built on the latest Java technologies for data processing and network communication.

The sheer scale of the data (several terabytes of new data per year) presents many exciting design challenges, so the successful candidate must have a corresponding passion for creative problem solving and the engineering of elegant, robust software systems using emerging tools. You will be working closely with the lead-programmer as part of a small, tight-knit, high-energy, high-IQ team, so the ability to work as a team-member but also think and code independently is critical.
