I had to develop several programs they needed and write or update several scripts. All this was used in their Videoconferencing System they had there

I learned and worked with:
- multicasting/unicastig: how it works, and the main difrences between them.
- learned about Reflectors, servers and clients: programs that run on a computer and are used in a multicasting system to connect a group of computers to a videoconferencing session. This way, even an user that has a unicast connection(dial up) can connect to a multicast videoconferencing session.
- worked with VIC and RAT in testing the multicastip capability used in the videoconferencing system. As implemented the VIC will use a multicastip channel and Rat another one but diffrent from the one used by VIC.
Perl ( Active State port of Perl version 5.6.1 )
- an inside of the language: variables, routines, scripts
- install/remove of the language and of the modules it works with. Example of such a module is NET-SNMP.mdl used in the VideoConferencing.
- making Perl scripts using the NET-
SNMP module for getting/setting variables from a device: encoders/decoders that exist within a private network .

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
- what it is used for and basics.
- MIBs (Management Information Base), that is one ore more files containing definition of objects or variables found within a device. I worked with Optivision Mibs for Encoders/Decoders. Example of such variables or objects are: In/Out Of Service, HostName, Etc .
- Software for SNMP that would work with a set of mibs. Example is GetIf.exe that is a graphical user interface:GUI that allows a user to set or get variables found in a device (Encoders/Decoders). Example: The multicast ip of the decoder can be set to the multicast ip of the encoder.
Multimedia
- learnt about the mpeg standards:Mpeg 1,2,4,7 , about DivX, about software encoders, decoders using Codecs. I tested difrent Codecs.
- I did an Internet research for finding programs that would be able to record an audio/video stream on a harddisk and then play the recorded file . Such programs are: Expert 1, Expert 2, Avi2Vcd,MPEGRepair, VirtualDub, QuickTime Player, BSP Player, FlaskMpeg, Divx Player .

Programs/Scripts that I have wrote :
A program that pings a series of machines ( routers, computers, encoders,decoders) to see their status within a private network. At regular time intervals the program generates a text log file showing the state of all the machines in that network. This log file can be imported in acces as a database. The database can be interrogated about the state of the machine in a certain period of time. The state of the machine can be online or offline.
Name of program: StationPing
A series of scripts in PERL using SNMP ( Simple Network Management Protocol ) that would set and get values from decoders/encoders within a private network. Such values are: The decoders and encoders are identified by their own IP. The IP of encoders/decoders can be read even from a file not only from command line.
Name of scripts: s.pl, sp3.pl, sp31.pl
I modified a Visual Basic script that receives as a parameter an Ip address, adds 3 to it and obtains the addres of the remote Decoder. The multicast Ip of this Decoder will be changed to the Multicast Ip of the Encoder transmitting. This script calls the sp3.pl perl script and is actually used in the VideoConferencing system.
Name of script: Conference.vbs
A program that will be used by the students to answer a questionnaire about the courses they attended , their teachers , the teacher assistants, the laboratories and the VideoConferencing system. There are 7 courses and for each course there is a set of questions about the teachers, the laboratories and so on. The program generates two files: one with the comments and one with the actual answers to the questions. The latter will be imported in Excel for further processing. Over all this has been an oportunity for me to learn about the fields mentiond above and to improve my knowledge in other fields I was already familiar with like: Visual Basic 6.0 , Microsoft Acces ,Microsoft Excel .

I have been in Italy for 3 month where I worked at Instituto di Padova Ricerche (a research institute under the direct control of University of Padova) .There I wrote several Visual Basic programs, I adapted some Perl scripts for the Audio Video system they developed there and I also did some research on the Internet for the different audio-video codecs existing in 2002. They needed this so they would make up their mind on which of these codecs to use. The selection was based on a Price/Performance ratio among several other factors . I also published several small sites on the Internet using free hosting. I am a fast typist. I did school projects in Pascal, C, Visual C++ and Visual Basic 6.0 +Microsoft Access. I connected computers together within a network, for the purpose of internet connection sharing. I have a category B driver license starting from 2001.
